Fukuoka University students in Sports and Health Science offered a snorkeling lesson for fifth and sixth graders at Yokote Elementary School again this year in collaboration with the staff from the Fukuoka Snorkeling Association. In this lesson, children who cannot swim at all learn to use equipment (a snorkel, snorkeling mask and fins) to overcome their fear of water, and become able to swim at least 25 meters by the end of the lesson. This event serves also as an invaluable hands-on learning opportunity for the university students, who aspire to become health and PE teachers or certified competitive swimming coaches, to improve their communication skills.

We hope to continue offering these lessons to help children become more interested in the environment and motivated to participate in environmental education programs held at watersides such as river or oceans, so that they learn about self-preservation skills.
